MEDICAL CODING
Medical Coding is the conversion of healthcare procedures, diagnosis, equipment used, treatment received and more into universally accepted alphanumeric codes. In order to preserve correct medical records, a medical coder converts information from a patient's medical records, including doctor's notes, lab results, procedures, and diagnoses. These standardised codes are used by insurance companies and healthcare providers for billing and record-keeping.
There are three types of universally accepted medical alphanumeric codes:
1) International Classification Of Diseases (ICD): These are diagnostic codes set by World Health Organisation (WHO). These codes can classify symptoms, diseases, illness and cause of death .
2) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT): These codes are procedural codes which identifies medical , surgical and diagnostic procedures.
3) Healthcare Common Procedure Coding (HCPCS): These codes are noted to medical equipment used. Coders use them to note medical procedures, products, supplies and services.
